Editorial Standards
Effective April 13, 2026
Michigan Capitol holds itself to the highest standards of public interest journalism. Our reporting covers state government, courts, and policy — institutions that directly impact the lives of Michigan residents. That responsibility demands precision, transparency, and independence.
Verification and Sourcing
We do not publish claims without supporting evidence. Every article includes direct links to source material — public records, court filings, government databases, or official statements — so that readers can verify our reporting independently. Unnamed sources are used only when the information serves the public interest and the source faces credible risk of retaliation.
Use of Technology
Michigan Capitol incorporates AI-assisted tools in our research and drafting process. These tools accelerate our ability to analyze public records and monitor government activity across the state. All published content undergoes editorial review for factual accuracy, and AI involvement is disclosed on every article.
Editorial Independence
Our newsroom operates independently of political parties, government agencies, advertisers, and advocacy organizations. No outside entity has influence over what we cover or how we cover it. We do not accept compensation in exchange for coverage.
Right of Response
When our reporting involves allegations or criticism of individuals or institutions, we provide the subject with an opportunity to respond before publication. Response deadlines and outcomes are documented in the article.
Corrections
Errors are corrected promptly and noted at the top of the affected article. We do not silently alter published reporting. If you believe we have made an error, contact our editorial team and we will review the matter within 48 hours.
Accountability
We report on institutions that wield public power. We hold ourselves to the same standard of accountability we expect from the officials and agencies we cover.
