73-Year-Old Inmate Stabbed at Macomb Correctional Facility
LENNOX TOWNSHIP — Michigan State Police are investigating the death of a convicted child sex offender at the Macomb Correctional Facility as a homicide.
Daniel Keith Hosmer died Wednesday, April 22, at the prison in Lenox Township, according to Jenni Riehle, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Corrections.
Riehle said lifesaving measures were initiated but were unsuccessful.
The incident at the prison, located northeast of Detroit, is being investigated by the Michigan State Police as a homicide. MDOC has not identified a suspect or released further details due to the ongoing investigation.
Hosmer, 73, was sentenced to 20-60 years in Kent County in 2023 on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a child under 13. The offenses occurred in 2021 and 2022, according to the MDOC Offender Tracking Information System.
He had previous convictions and incarcerations dating back to the 1970s. He was previously convicted of second-degree home invasion-conspiracy, second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a child under 13, breaking and entering, and indecent liberties involving a child.
A tipster told WXYZ-TV that Hosmer was stabbed in the eye with a broom handle.
The Michigan Department of Corrections has not released information about what led to the death or the identity of any alleged perpetrator.
