A Genesee County Jury Delivers a Guilty Verdict in a Brutal Family Killing
A Flint man was found guilty of first-degree premeditated murder Tuesday for shooting his father 24 times in the face during a domestic dispute at their home on Gratiot Avenue.
Pierre Dwayne Chambers, 34, faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. He will be sentenced on August 11, according to the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office.
The conviction covers the November 8, 2024 death of Osborn Chambers, 62, at the family residence, according to news releases from prosecutor's office and reporting from multiple local outlets.
The Shooting That Shook a Family
Osborn Chambers and his wife had attended a funeral service earlier that day. Osborn returned home alone. He and his son got into an argument shortly after his return, according to testimony presented at trial and police reports, as reported by ABC12, WNEM, and The Flint Courier News.
Pierre Chambers retrieved a handgun from his bedroom. He fired multiple shots at his father. Evidence showed Osborn Chambers was struck 24 times in the face, once in the chest, once in the right shoulder and arm, and grazed on the left hand, according to trial testimony cited by all three outlets.
After the shooting, Pierre Chambers left the home and purchased beer at a local party store. He returned approximately 10 minutes later and called 911 to report the shooting, according to police reports cited by the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office.
Responding officers found Osborn Chambers lying face down on a staircase inside the home. Pierre Chambers was taken into custody at the scene.
Prosecutor Calls It Tragic and Avoidable
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton released a statement after the verdict.
"This was another sad incident in our community that involved a gun, alcohol, and perhaps some mental health issues. Most importantly, it is another tragic and avoidable conflict that resulted in the loss of life," Leyton said.
Leyton praised Assistant Prosecutor Sara Brady, who led the prosecution team at trial. He also credited paralegals, legal assistants, and law enforcement officers who worked on the case, according to the prosecutor's office news release.
Five Additional Felony Charges
Chambers was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder. He was also convicted of five related felony charges, according to The Flint Courier News and ABC12.
The specific nature of those five additional convictions was not detailed in the prosecutor's office news release or in reporting from local outlets.
What Comes Next
Chambers remains in custody at the Genesee County Jail. His sentencing hearing is set for August 11. Michigan law mandates life without parole for first-degree premeditated murder convictions.
The case underscores the ongoing toll of gun violence in Flint. It also highlights the challenges prosecutors face in cases involving domestic disputes that escalate to lethal force.
