Teen flushed from hiding place after neighbors report gunfire

Kalamazoo police arrested an 18-year-old man Tuesday after shots were fired in a residential neighborhood, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said. No one was injured.

Officers were dispatched around 3 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Elm Street and West Ransom Street in the Stuart neighborhood on numerous reports of shots fired, KDPS said in a news release.

Suspect caught after brief foot pursuit

Police received a description of the suspect and began searching the area, according to the release. Neighbors told investigators the suspect may have been hiding nearby.

Officers located the 18-year-old Kalamazoo resident and he tried to run away, police said. He was caught shortly after and taken into custody.

"Public safety officers quickly responded to reports of shots fired and flushed the teen from a hiding place, recovering the gun and several spent casings," according to a report from WKZO Jack 106.5.

Multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene. A firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was also found nearby, police said.

Charges filed, investigation continues

The suspect was arrested on charges related to weapons and resisting and obstructing officers, KDPS said. The incident remains under investigation.

Investigators did not say what the intended target of the gunfire might have been, according to WKZO.
