# Warren Man Sentenced To 270 Days In Jail After Police Chase With 9-Year-Old Son In Car

A Detroit man who drove drunk and led Warren officers on a high-speed chase while his 9-year-old son was in the car was sentenced to jail on Wednesday.

Otez Coil pleaded no contest after police said he drove intoxicated, fled from officers, and crashed while his 9-year-old son was in the vehicle.

Warren officers were on patrol near Van Dyke and Civic Center Boulevard at around 9:30 p.m. on December 16 when they saw a Jeep Cherokee speeding and making abrupt lane changes without signaling.

Officers tried to initiate a traffic stop on the driver, identified as 31-year-old Otez Coil, but he refused to stop.

The driver then fled southbound on Van Dyke at speeds reaching about 80 mph.

Police said the chase ended at 11 Mile Road near Van Dyke when Coil tried to make a right turn, lost control of the car and crashed into the guardrail.

After crashing, Coil allegedly got out of the car and grabbed his 9-year-old son and held onto him as officers approached him to take him into custody.

Police safely separated Coil from his son and arrested him without further incident.

The child was not injured during the incident.

While investigating, officers smelled a strong odor of intoxicants and saw open alcohol bottles inside the car.

Coil pleaded no contest to fourth-degree child abuse, operating while intoxicated and second-degree fleeing and eluding.

As part of his plea agreement, his charge of driving with a suspended license was dismissed.

On May 13, he was sentenced to 270 days in jail and two to three years of probation.

Warren man charged with fourth-degree child abuse, operating while intoxicated, second-degree fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspended license.
