Michigan Democrats selected Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit as their candidate for state attorney general on Sunday, April 19, during the Michigan Democratic Party's state endorsement convention in Detroit.

Savit won the endorsement over Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald during the party's convention at Huntington Place. The event drew over 7,200 registered delegates who voted on candidates for various offices.

"I will stand for the people no matter who it is that's on the other side," Savit said at the convention. "That can mean it's either the boss that's stealing from you, it's an environmental polluter, or if it's the president of the United States himself."

According to his campaign, Savit's top priorities include prosecution and prevention of serious crime, fighting for voting rights, education and reproductive freedom, and ensuring safe working conditions for Michiganders. He has also stated that "polluters must be held accountable for the damage they cause to our environment" and has previous experience as an environmental attorney.

An Ann Arbor native, Savit graduated from Kalamazoo College and worked as a school teacher before attending University of Michigan's law school. After graduating from law school, he clerked for Supreme Court justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, according to his campaign website.

Current Attorney General Dana Nessel is term limited and cannot run again. The Michigan Democratic Party has held the governor, attorney general and secretary of state trifecta since 2018.

"I would love to build on some of the stuff that Dana Nessel has done, particularly on the consumer digital protection space," Savit said.

Republicans endorsed Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd for the role in March. Savit hopes for a race "focused on the issues" that Michigan has "deserved" according to his remarks at the convention.

A third candidate, Bill Noakes, dropped out of the race as he did not secure the number of required signatures to contend for the nomination.
