County Board Votes to Reopen Military Talks
The Marquette County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted Tuesday to explore bringing a United States Air Force base back to the Upper Peninsula.
The resolution marks the first formal step in nearly 31 years since the closure of K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base in 1995.
According to WNMU-FM, Board Chair Joe Derocha described the vote as a "starting point" in attracting activities that could revitalize the region. The board approved the resolution to begin talks with defense personnel about possibly reestablishing a base at the site.
The resolution states that the Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport (SAW) remains a strategic asset capable of supporting both civilian aviation and military aviation activities.
State Lawmakers Pledge Support
Three Michigan state representatives pledged their support for the county's initiative on Thursday.
Rep. Dave Prestin (R-Cedar River) said the Upper Peninsula has not had an active military base in decades. He added that defense experts are recognizing the strategic importance of the Superior region.
"I applaud the Marquette County Commission for recognizing this and pursuing the restoration of a military mission to the region. The U.P. stands ready to once again host the personnel and equipment essential to the defense of our great nation," said Prestin.
Rep. Karl Bohnak (R-Deerton) noted that the community remembers the economic benefits of a fully functional air base. He emphasized that any new facility would not be a replica of the old base.
"It’s important to note that this wouldn’t be K.I. Sawyer 2.0. This would be a unique facility that will have to be fully worked through with local and federal partners," said Bohnak.
Rep. Greg Markkanen (R-Hancock) added that the Air Force currently relies on Upper Peninsula infrastructure for significant training exercises. He said securing a new base would open more possibilities for the region's role in national defense.
Addressing Local Concerns
Some residents expressed concern that a return of the military could lead to a loss of local housing.
Commissioners stated that housing loss is not expected. According to WNMU-FM, the resolution is intended to gauge interest from local shareholders and encourage conversations with the military sector.
The Air Force continues to use the Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport for training exercises. These include large-scale joint exercises like Northern Strike.
The Soo Leader reported that the vote was unanimous. The county will now begin the process of obtaining information to possibly recommission the airport in part as an Air Force base.
