The Michigan Department of Transportation has begun a $1.2 million resurfacing project on I-94 Business Loop in Battle Creek, targeting the stretch of Michigan Avenue and Main Street that serves as the commercial backbone of downtown Calhoun County.
The work started Tuesday, May 26, and is expected to run through Friday, July 31, 2026. Drivers should expect alternating single- and double-lane closures during the project.
What the project covers
According to the MDOT press release, the project spans 1.3 miles of I-94 BL between Dickman Road and the Amtrak railroad. Contractor Lakeland Asphalt Corp. is handling the work. The scope includes:
- Milling and resurfacing of the roadway
- Concrete sidewalk ramp upgrades
- New pavement markings
Resurfacing will improve safety and the ride quality and extend the life of the pavement.
Economic impact
MDOT estimates the investment will directly and indirectly support 10 jobs based on the agency's economic modeling.
Why it matters for Battle Creek
I-94 Business Loop is the primary east-west corridor through downtown Battle Creek. Michigan Avenue carries daily commuter traffic, commercial delivery routes, and Amtrak passenger rail access. The lane closures during the July 4 holiday period could affect summer travel plans for residents and visitors using the corridor.
The project is part of MDOT's ongoing maintenance program for state-owned highways in Calhoun County. No state legislative appropriation was required for this specific project, as it falls within the department's existing transportation budget.
MDOT has not announced additional resurfacing projects planned for the Battle Creek area beyond this contract.
