Local coffee shop moves from Butternut to River Avenue with new vision for Holland

HOLLAND TWP. — Simpatico Coffee has completed a significant expansion, closing one location and opening another in a brand new building that the founder calls a love letter to Holland.

The local coffee shop closed its location at 975 Butternut Drive on April 24 and reopened at 235 North River Avenue on April 29. The business relocated to a new building at River Avenue and Lakewood Boulevard that was completed after construction began last fall.

Alex Fink, the Simpatico founder, described the sleek white building as iterative, meaning it could be easily replicated in other communities. Fink wrote in an email to The Holland Sentinel that the Simpatico employees and he wanted to create a space that fit the company's aesthetics and ideals of cleanliness, neighborliness, consistency and always moving the business of coffee forward.

The corner property was purchased by Simpatico Coffee and Doubledog Properties LLC in 2023, with the intention of transforming the space into a vibrant economic corridor with new architecture and infrastructure. An adjacent building that is being remodeled has started advertising for tenants.

Simpatico maintains its home base and additional location at 714 Michigan Avenue, where the brand creates scratch-made baked goods and breakfast options.

Fink said a supportive community has kept the doors open and good memories going. We light up the open sign every day hoping we will continue to make Holland proud, Fink said in an email to The Sentinel.
