Marquette Area Residents Save Money on Fuel While State Average Climbs

Marquette residents are paying the lowest gas prices in Michigan this week, according to a new report from The Auto Club Group.

The northern Upper Peninsula city saw prices drop to $4.50 per gallon for regular unleaded gas, making it the most affordable location in the entire state. This represents a 14 cent decrease from last week.

Michigan drivers statewide are now paying an average of $4.73 per gallon for regular unleaded gas, which is 70 cents more than this time last month and $1.66 more than this time last year.

The AAA gas cost calculator shows that a round trip from Detroit to Cleveland would cost just under $60 for gas, assuming a vehicle that gets 27 miles per gallon.

The least expensive gas price averages this week in Michigan are Marquette at $4.50, Flint at $4.57, and Lansing at $4.67, according to the AAA report.

Ann Arbor remains the most expensive location in the state at $4.79 per gallon, followed by Metro Detroit at $4.77 and Benton Harbor at $4.76.

Gas prices in Michigan and Ohio are both above the national average of $4.52 that AAA is posting Monday.

The Great Lakes region has been affected by national gas price trends as well as refinery issues that have impacted both gas and diesel production in the Midwest states.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for Gas Buddy, said the Midwest states have been higher than the national average in recent weeks.

AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland noted that the 14 cent drop from last week gives drivers some relief, but warned that prices could change direction again just as quickly given ongoing volatility.

President Trump said on Monday morning that he intends to suspend the federal gas tax for a period of time. That step would require an act of Congress.
