Children escape kitchen fire with cuts and smoke inhalation

Four children escaped a house fire in Muskegon Heights Monday evening, but not without injury.

The Muskegon Heights Fire Department said the fire broke out in the kitchen of a home on Highland Street shortly after 8 p.m.

One child broke window to escape

While fire engines 120 and 121 were responding, the department received an additional call letting them know a child on scene had lacerations to their hands from broken glass.

Upon arriving at the scene, fire crews quickly got to work making an interior attack and were able to get the fire under control.

At that same time, first responders gave aid to the child who had suffered cuts to their hands. The cuts came from breaking a bedroom window to get away from the smoke and out of the home.

Three more children need medical attention

The department was then made aware of three more children in need of medical attention. Three children who had also been in the home showed signs of smoke inhalation.

The children had already left the scene in a vehicle, so a third fire engine, engine 111, met them a few blocks away from the scene to render aid.

Smoke alarms helped prevent worse outcome

The Muskegon Heights Fire Department said a big reason why the injuries from the fire were not more serious can be credited to the three functioning smoke alarms within the home.

One smoke alarm was on each floor of the house. The alarms alerted the family to the fire.

The children, along with an adult, were located in different areas of the house when the fire broke out. They were able to escape.

Investigation underway

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
