Battle Creek residents should expect heavy traffic, loud fireworks, and closed roads this week as the city hosts one of the nation's largest air shows and balloon festivals.
The 2026 Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival runs July 1 through July 5 at the Battle Creek Executive Airport. The event is celebrating America's 250th birthday with military aircraft, civilian aerobatic teams, hot air balloons, concerts, and fireworks.
F-35 Lightning II Leads Military Lineup
The headliner for the aviation performances is the United States Air Force F-35A Lightning II Demonstration Team, according to event organizers. The F-35A is one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world.
The festival is also featuring an MQ-9 Reaper drone on static display for the first time in the event's history, according to the Hastings Reminder.
"As we celebrate America's 250th birthday, there's no better place to gather with family and friends than the Battle Creek Field of Flight," event organizers said in a statement published by the Hastings Reminder. "From world-class aviation performances and hot-air balloons to fireworks and live entertainment, this year's event promises to be an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages."
Civilian Teams and Night Shows Draw Crowds
The civilian lineup includes:
- The Misty Blues All-Women Skydiving Team
- The Northern Stars Aeroteam from Canada
- The NextGen Eagles
- Franklin's Flying Circus
- Bob Carlton's twin jet-powered sailplane
- The Jack Aces Mustang Aerobatic Team
The festival features one of the largest twilight and night air shows in the country, according to organizers. Daily hot air balloon launches and evening balloon illuminations presented by Kalsee Credit Union are also scheduled.
The Field of Flight made the top 10 in USA TODAY's 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards for 2026, earning recognition in the "Thrills 'n' Wheels" category, according to the Battle Creek Enquirer.
Road Closures and Parking Enforcement
The City of Battle Creek issued detailed traffic guidance for residents and visitors ahead of the festival.
Primary closures:
- Helmer Road between West Columbia Avenue and West Dickman Road will be closed starting at 10 a.m. on July 1 and remaining closed through the end of the festival on July 5
- No through traffic will be allowed in that area during that time
Event parking will primarily be accessed from Helmer Road, which can be approached from either the north or the south. Limited parking will also be available off South Airport Road, just north of West Columbia Avenue, according to the city announcement.
The Battle Creek Police Department will strictly enforce no-parking zones along West Columbia Avenue near the south end of the airport. Vehicles parked along the roadway may be ticketed or towed, the city said.
Fireworks and Noise
The Battle Creek Police Department warned neighbors that pyrotechnics including loud booms will be used during the festival. The July 4 fireworks display is scheduled for approximately 10:30 p.m.
Additional temporary traffic control measures will follow the fireworks displays on July 1 and July 4 to help vehicles safely exit the area, the city said.
Half Marathon Adds Sunday Closures
The Battle Creek Half Marathon takes place on Sunday morning, July 5. Temporary road closures will occur as runners cross West Columbia Avenue at South 24th Street between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Drivers are encouraged to avoid West Columbia Avenue between South 20th Street and Helmer Road South during that window, the city said.
