# El Sol School to Host Open House at New Site in Kalamazoo
A community open house will be held Monday from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the future site of El Sol School at 1428 Baker Street in Kalamazoo. School officials say this is an opportunity for anyone interested to see the location and renderings of the new building.
The current El Sol School is located at 604 West Vine Street. Students will remain in the current building until construction of the new building is completed. The open house allows the community to see where the new school will be built and what it will look like.
New School Planned for 2028-29 School Year
The Kalamazoo Public Schools plans to have the new school built in time for the 2028-29 school year. That initial year would only include K through 5 students. Sixth grade would be added the following year, with 7th and 8th grades progressively added each year after that.
The magnet school aims to graduate students who are proficient in both English and Spanish. The school has been operating in its current location in Kalamazoo's Vine neighborhood.
Location Change Approved by Board
The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Trustees last November approved preliminary designs for a new school that would give El Sol room to include middle schoolers. The board previously voted to move the school from its current location in the city of Kalamazoo's Vine neighborhood to a plot of district-owned land in Kalamazoo Township's Eastwood neighborhood. But the board then reversed that decision by deciding to put the new school on Baker Street instead.
Construction Approved in 2022 Bond Issue
After construction was approved in a 2022 bond issue, the Kalamazoo Public Schools is about to work on building the new El Sol School. The future site is located at 1428 Baker Street in Kalamazoo Township's Eastwood neighborhood.
School officials encourage anyone interested in the project to attend the open house and see the renderings of the new building.
