The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Commits Up To $100 Million For New High School In Flint

The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation announced Monday it is committing up to $100 million for a new high school in Flint. The Foundation is celebrating 100 years of working in partnership with its hometown and is excited to help make the community vision for a new high school a reality.

Site Located At Former Flint Central High School

The announcement is the result of conversations and collaboration with community members, Flint Community Schools leadership and the Flint Board of Education. The Foundation's commitment includes more than $6 million already awarded to support design work, demolition and site preparation at the former Flint Central High School.

Construction Timeline Targets 2028-29 School Year

Abatement work at the former Flint Central High School site is expected to begin later this month, followed by demolition later this year and construction thereafter. The goal is for the new high school to open in time for the 2028-29 school year.

Community Leaders Express Gratitude For Investment

As we build this new high school, we are building something Flint can be proud of. We are grateful for the support and focused on delivering for our scholars. The funding will help construct a new building and its impact will extend even further. It will be an opportunity to redefine what is possible for Flint kids through strong instruction, innovative learning and clear pathways to college, careers and life.

The investment also builds on $35.9 million previously awarded by the state of Michigan last year.

High School Belongs To People Of Flint

This is a proud moment for Flint. We are thankful for the partnership behind the work, but what matters most is how the community is shaping what this school will become. This high school belongs to the people of Flint and reflects our shared belief in our young people.
