Fire Started From Discarding of Smoking Materials on Exterior Balcony
Dozens of residents are displaced after a fire at The Village at Chandler Crossings apartment complex near the border of Bath Township and East Lansing.
The fire broke out at the apartment complex just off Chandler Road some time after 8 p.m. on May 9.
Entire Building Sustained Damage From Fire
Bath Township Fire Chief Mark Koonter tells News 10 the fire started on an exterior balcony from careless discarding of smoking materials and it spread through the attic.
Koonter said 46 residents in the three-story 12-unit building were displaced. The entire building sustained smoke and water damage but only apartments on the third floor had fire in them according to Koonter.
No injuries were reported and all occupants have been provided shelter from the apartment complex.
Drone Photos Show Extensive Roof Damage
Drone photos from above the complex on Sunday showed extensive damage to the building's roof.
The complex website markets the development as premier student living near MSU. Most MSU commencements were a week ago which may have reduced the number of people in the building at 3839 Hunsaker Drive.
Will Dryer a representative reached at Chandler Crossing's office on Sunday said his main concern was getting these kids situated someplace warm and would not to comment further.
Building Owned by The Village on Hunsaker LLC
Clinton County online records show the development is owned by The Village on Hunsaker LLC based in Troy Michigan.
The complex website highlights the benefits of the apartments for MSU students. Floor plans amenities and location combine to create an awesome off-campus living experience at The Village at Chandler Crossings.
Michigan State University is just 10 minutes away and it's only 3.7 miles to Spartan Stadium. The website promises.
One-bedroom units at the complex rent for $1 280 while two three and four-bedroom units also are available. Single-room rent for four-bedroom units starts at $469 per person according to the complex website.
Bath Township Fire Chief Mark Koonter did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Sunday May 10.
