SAGINAW -- Saginaw Police rescued a woman from a burning vehicle after a single-vehicle crash on Thursday evening.

A 24-year-old woman was hospitalized following the incident on the 1700 block of North Mason Street near Irving Avenue around 8:35 p.m. on Thursday, May 14.

Dispatch reported that the driver of a blue sedan struck a tree and crashed into another parked car, then rolled onto its side. Flames started coming from the engine compartment, police said.

The driver was unable to get out of the burning vehicle when officers arrived.

Saginaw Police broke out the windows of the car and freed the woman. A neighbor helped put out the flames by using a fire extinguisher before the Saginaw Fire Department arrived. Firefighters were able to fully extinguish the fire.

The driver was taken to a local hospital for her injuries, and is expected to recover.

Officers were also injured during the rescue.

"Without assistance from the officers, the firefighters and the neighbor, the driver would have faced almost certain death," said Police Chief Robert Ruth.

"Their decisive actions helped prevent a tragedy."

The crash is under investigation.
