The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office held its annual police memorial ceremony on Friday afternoon in downtown Traverse City. The event took place during National Police Week outside the Governmental Center.

Undersheriff Randy Fewless said the ceremony honors local law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. The event also recognizes the sacrifices made by officers still serving today.

The community was invited to attend the ceremony as a show of support for local law enforcement and the families of fallen officers.

"We appreciate that the families of the fallen can attend," Fewless said. "We feel it's not only important for those, but also for the officers that still continue to serve in our communities to know that they are appreciated and that they're our families."

Fewless emphasized that the ceremony is an important reminder to the northern Michigan community about the sacrifice officers make daily.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office hosted the event to recognize the contributions of law enforcement in the region.
