Dusty May accepted a head coaching position with the Dallas Mavericks on Monday, just months after leading the Michigan Wolverines to their first national championship in men's basketball since 1989. The departure leaves Ann Arbor's top athletic program searching for a replacement during one of the most critical windows of the offseason.
A Historic Exit
The 49-year-old May compiled a 64-13 record in two seasons at Michigan. He guided the Wolverines from an 8-24 campaign under former coach Juwan Howard to a 37-3 finish and a national title in 2026, defeating UConn 69-63 in the championship game in Indianapolis.
"May becomes the first national championship-winning head coach to leave a program in the immediate offseason following a title since 1988, when Larry Brown departed Kansas months after leading the Jayhawks to a national championship to take over the San Antonio Spurs," according to ClickOnDetroit.
May also becomes the first college basketball coach to leave for an NBA head coaching job since John Beilein took the Cleveland Cavaliers position in 2019.
What May Takes to Dallas
May replaces Jason Kidd, who was dismissed after a 26-56 season with the Mavericks. He inherits a roster built around Cooper Flagg, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year who averaged 21.0 points per game last season. Flagg was selected first overall by Dallas in the previous offseason.
May's coaching resume includes six seasons at Florida Atlantic, where he led the Owls to a Final Four appearance in 2023. Over his final four seasons as a college head coach, he posted a 124-26 record, according to Fox News.
The Search for a Replacement
Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel now faces a rapid coaching search. The transfer portal opens within five days of May's official hiring announcement, creating pressure to move quickly.
Assistant coach Mike Boynton is viewed as a leading internal candidate. Boynton previously spent seven seasons as head coach at Oklahoma State, where he coached future Detroit Pistons No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham. He has served as Michigan's defensive architect under May.
Manuel previously promoted from within when he elevated Sherrone Moore to replace Jim Harbaugh after Michigan's football national championship in 2023.
Roster Questions Loom
Michigan returns a talented roster despite losing Yaxel Lendeborg, Morez Johnson Jr., and Aday Mara to the NBA Draft. The Wolverines are ranked No. 3 in several early preseason polls.
Key players include:
- Elliot Cadeau, senior guard and Most Outstanding Player of the 2026 NCAA Final Four
- Trey McKenney, rising sophomore guard
- Brandon McCoy Jr., five-star incoming freshman
- J.P. Estrella and Moustapha Thiam, incoming transfers
Under NCAA rules, players can reevaluate their futures once a new head coach is hired. Retaining Cadeau and McKenney will likely become a top priority for the program.
"Manuel's next move could determine whether Michigan sustains its momentum or faces another period of transition," ClickOnDetroit reported.
The timing of May's departure creates additional challenges as roster management becomes increasingly important in the era of the transfer portal and name, image, and likeness compensation.
