Five mallard ducklings freed in Traverse City after firefighters respond to Monday morning call

Traverse City Firefighters L646 responded to a call Monday morning when five mallard ducklings needed rescue from a storm drain on the city's streets. Firefighters with Engine 1 freed the baby ducks and moved them to a safer nearby location.

The family of ducklings was found in the storm drain and firefighters released them in an area where five to six other mallard pairs and ducklings were already nearby according to the department.

While the mother duck was not present during the rescue firefighters said she usually stays close to the area when her ducklings are in trouble. Firefighters believe heavy vehicle traffic nearby may have scared the mother away from the storm drain.

Firefighters said they often respond to calls like this each spring when ducklings find themselves in dangerous situations. The rescued ducklings quickly joined another duckling after being released in the secure location.

A social media post shared the rescue moment with the public and the Traverse City Fire Department confirmed the story.
