Victim Dies 12 Days After Being Shot in the Head
An 18-year-old man faces murder charges in Lansing after a 19-year-old woman died from injuries sustained in a shooting on the city's southwest side.
Jovanathan Jamar Mitchell was arraigned in 54A District Court on Wednesday, June 17, on charges of open murder, carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm, and reckless use of a firearm, according to the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office.
Mitchell was initially charged with assault with intent to murder and felony firearm after his arrest on June 5. Those charges were dismissed after the victim succumbed to her injuries Wednesday morning, prosecutors said.
Shooting on Moores River Drive
Lansing Police Department officers responded to the 2700 block of Moores River Drive near Frances Park around 3 a.m. on June 5 after receiving reports of a shooting, according to police.
"Officers found the 19-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the head," the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.
The woman was transported to a hospital in critical condition. She died on Wednesday, June 17, 12 days after the shooting, according to the Lansing Police Department.
Authorities have not released the victim's name. Officials also have not released details about a possible motive or the relationship between the victim and Mitchell.
Court Dates and Bond Set
Mitchell was arrested at the scene on June 5. His bond was set at $800,000 cash or surety, according to court records.
The case has been assigned to Judge Stacia Buchanan. Upcoming court proceedings are scheduled as follows:
- Pre-Examination Conference: Thursday, June 25 at 10:30 a.m.
- Preliminary Examination: Thursday, July 2 at 10:00 a.m.
Mitchell is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law, prosecutors said.
